WWOZ Pledge Drive

Did you know we have one the greatest American radio stations here in New Orleans? What makes it great is that it’s listener funded. What also makes it great is that occasionally you have local musicians doing the early morning shows that are just getting in from their all night gigs, and they are never afraid to admit they are either running on empty or still reeling from the gig that morning. What makes it American (other than the fact that it resides here on our continent) is that the programming is a constant reminder of the influence New Orleans music has had on America and the world. One minute this station is a history lesson, the next minute you are hearing a new artist that is sending you straight to a search engine to find out more. But talking about music is like dancing about painting (or something like that) - so have a listen for yourself since they stream their station live around world and pledge what you can.

annie_oakly_american_girl.jpg

This Saturday night is THE night in New Orleans to stroll in and out of Art galleries at your leisure and get charmingly drunk on free wine. There’s so much to do and so much to see. So we’re going to pick a couple of our favorites to give you an idea of what we’ll be up to. Make sure to get plenty of rest Friday night and put on a pair of comfortable shoes and let the art and music lead you where it may - but make sure you swing by our Art for Art’s Sake pick #1 - SALONE DELL’ARTE S ARTEMISIA

From our friends The Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau -

“Local artist Shmuela Padnos is pleased to announce the grand opening of a new gallery and interactive arts resource in the Lower Garden District. Salone Dell’Artes Artemisia has a user-friendly philosophy about art in the community - the space will exhibit work in multiple media by artists from New Orleans and around the world while also providing a funky, relaxed salon atmosphere for adults and kids alike to lea! rn and experiment with art. Padnos plans to incorporate a reference library of art books into the gallery, as well as still and life drawing classes for all ages and music presented by the R&B revivalists the Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau.

Salone Dell’Artes Artemisia is named for the Early Baroque Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653), a Caravaggio-influenced artist whose contribution was largely unsung until the latter half of the twentieth century. At a time when it was considered shocking - even revolutionary - for women to enter the arts, Artemisia persevered and became the first woman accepted into the prestigious Accademia del Disegno (Academy of Drawing) in Florence.

Shmuela Padnos is a mixed-media artist whose work was described by Claude LeSur in ARTSPEAK magazine as figurative mannerism. The first artists shown at Salone dell’Artes Artemisia will be Padnos (paintings and mixed media), Will Smith (paintings), Elaine Gleason (sculpture) and Son! tina Reed-Hall (paintings.) ”

See you on Magaine Street.

Wednesday at the Square is back!

wedsatthesquare.jpg

The Wednesday concerts at Lafayette Square start tonight at 5:30 and will continue every Wednesday this October. And who better to kick them off than New Orleans own Eddie Bo, the man who gave us the funky “Hook and Sling”. There will be sure to be some hip shakin’ in the cool-for-New-Orleans October breeze tonight. We at typeNO+ certainly love these concerts ’cause they’re right outside our offices. The music is free, but be sure to get drink tickets before waiting in the beer line, and don’t forget those few extra tickets for a pulled pork sandwich or slice of pizza from our local restaurant vendors.

The musician schedule for Wednesday at the Square is as follows:

Ingrid Lucia + Eddie Bo
Shamarr Allen + Paul Sanchez & Ivan Neville
beatin path + Bonerama
Brian Seeger & the Gentilly Groovemasters + Tab Benoit

More info on the concerts can be found here.
