The New Orleans chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design, will host its first annual Design Summit on Tuesday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall on Loyola University’s campus.

The program is intended to bring together creative professionals from the region to discuss ways in which the design community at large can contribute to the ongoing rebuilding efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans. The event is free and open to the public.

“We are excited about opening up doors for people, and to begin a meaningful conversation about how design can be part of the larger discussion of rebuilding New Orleans,” said Wes McWhorter, president of AIGA’s New Orleans chapter.

The December 16 Design Summit is co-sponsored by HumidBeings.com.

The summit will feature a moderated panel discussion with many of the top design professionals in the New Orleans area. They include:

Allen Eskew of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple - moderator
Tom Varisco of Tom Varisco Design
Winnie Hart of the H Agency
Robbie Vitrano of Trumpet
Kathy Cain of Zehno Cross Media Communications
Adam Newman of Zande+Newman
Christy Hackenberg of Creative Zumo
Byron Mouton of bildit and the Tulane School of Architecture
John Pucci of Peter A. Mayer Advertising
Nathan Williams of the New Orleans Tourism & Marketing Corp.

Topics will include:

* Raising awareness of the importance of design in our community
* Reinforcing the value of design thinking
* Understanding how designers can help rebuild New Orleans locally and abroad
* Supporting design education
* Designers’ responsibility to the community
As the professional association for design, AIGA New Orleans’ mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. It is the forum for design professionals to exchange ideas and information, to participate in critical analysis and research and to advance education and ethical practices. Nationally, AIGA promotes design in economic, social, political, cultural and creative contexts.

AIGA’s initiatives in New Orleans range from supporting displaced designers after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Gustav to documenting the history of graphic design in South Louisiana. A major goal is to raise awareness of the intrinsic value of good, thoughtful design in our community. AIGA New Orleans seeks to become a resource for all creative people in the community who are looking to participate in meaningful work.

“We intend to establish the Design Summit as an annual event,” McWhorter said. “We want to inspire everyone involved to incorporate what we learn from our discussions into goals and projects for the following year.”
